Jennifer Hefner, '07, Featured in About.Com Article on Single Parent Scholarship
Jennifer Hefner of Yellville, Class of 2007, was the subject of a feature article on the New York Times Corporation's online newsletter About.Com. The article, headlined "Scholarships -- The Gift of Confidence" and written by Deb Peterson of the about.com staff, delved extensively into Jennifer's early high-school years.
During that time, she became pregnant and married a methamphetamine dealer. After the marriage broke up, according to the article, Jennifer realized how much her daughter Katie was depending on her and began the arduous process of parenting while working full-time and going to school.
About the Single Parent Scholarship, she was quoted as saying: "I was awarded a scholarship and it made me feel good about myself, as though I could do this, I could be a college graduate. I remember having my picture taken for the newspaper. I was so proud of myself. It was like a great accomplishment for me.”
