Prof. Ranko Oliver to Advise US Civil Rights Commission on Disability Issues




Associate Professor Ranko Shiraki Oliver has been appointed by the United States Commission on Civil Rights to its Arkansas State Advisory Committee. 

 
Professor Oliver is a recipient of the Arkansas Bar Association Golden Gavel award for her work as Chair of the Committee on Individuals with Disabilities.  She has conducted continuing education courses for attorneys and numerous presentations to other groups in the areas of disability law and legal writing.  At the UALR William H. Bowen School of Law, she teaches Legal Writing, Immigration Law and Disability Law.  Fluent in Spanish, she has also served as a simultaneous interpreter in court and worked on the certification of interpreters for the Arkansas Supreme Court.
 
SAC members are appointed for a period of two years, serve without compensation, and assist the Commission with its fact-finding, investigative, and information dissemination functions.  Among other functions, the Arkansas SAC advises the Commission of alleged instances of deprivation of civil rights in Arkansas; works with the Commission on matters of mutual concern in the preparation of Commission reports to the President and the Congress; and forwards to the Commission advice and recommendations about related matters.
