Tim spent the summer in Shanghai, working with the American Chamber of Commerce. His task was to develop a best practices guide to corporate social responsibility in China. As part of his project, he personally interviewed the heads of corporate social responsibility for four American corporations operating in China: General Electric, Coca-Cola, Intel, and Dow Chemical. He also interviewed an official at the nonprofit World Wildlife Fund. For these organizations, corporate social responsibility refers mostly to their efforts to protect the environment and promote education. Based on his efforts in China, Tim was able to draft a 45-page report that profiled the four corporations and the WWF, outlining proposed best practices for corporate social responsibility.

Idonia spend the summer in Belize, where she originally planned to do a project on immigration. Upon her arrival, however, she learned that there was a greater need to deal with the issue of sex crimes in that country. The number of reported sex crimes tripled between 1996 and 2006, while the Belize population had increased by only about 50%. Idonia worked with a local attorney toward the goal of creating sex crimes prosecutors—called Crown Counsels—under the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution. Dovetailing with her government efforts, Idonia developed a publicity campaign that involved television and radio, along with a “Shine the Light on Sexual Assault” community meeting. While Idonia was in Belize, the Director of Public Prosecution committed to hire at least one Crown Counsel to prosecute sex crimes, and that prosecutor has been hired. This change can be credited to the positive work Idonia performed.
We congratulate Idonia Trotter and Tim Giattina, two Bowen School/Clinton School students who made positive and important changes internationally while pursuing their educational goals. Tim will be a 1L beginning in the Fall of 2009. In May, Idonia will become the first Clinton/Bowen concurrent graduate.
